How do infrared heaters work?

Infrared heaters not only emit cosy warmth, but also a pleasant glow. Infrared radiation, also known as infrared light, heats people and objects directly rather than heating the air around them like other types of heaters do. Infrared radiation is also part of natural sunlight and, therefore, very agreeable to us.

The most important information at a glance:

  • Infrared radiation heats up people and objects directly rather than the air around them
  • There is no air turbulence (suitable for allergy sufferers)
  • The amount of heat generated depends on the wattage of the heater
  • The amount of heat felt depends on the distance from heater
  • Infrared heaters can be used indoors and outdoors
  • The choice of the heater depends on the application area
  • Infrared radiation is harmless for humans and animals since no harmful UV radiation is emitted

Infrared heaters are the perfect combination of heat and light. They are commonly used in outdoor areas in the food service industry, but can also be used on private patios and balconies. Inside, they are also very practical because the heat they produce can be used in different rooms such as bathrooms, industrial buildings and even saunas.

What is special about infrared heaters?

As we've already mentioned, infrared heating is very pleasant for humans as well as animals because we're used to it as a natural part of sunlight. And because it heats people and objects directly rather than the surrounding air, there is no air turbulence. This means, dust remains undisturbed, which makes infrared heaters ideal for allergy sufferers. Another advantage is that infrared heaters are maintenance-free. For cleaning, simply wipe the housing and components with a dry cloth (do not use water).

How warm do infrared heaters get?

Infrared heaters transform electricity into warming infrared radiation. The light bars themselves reach up to 900°C and are, therefore, protected by a grille. The amount of heat generated depends on the performance of the heater, while the distance to it determines how much heat can be felt. As a general guideline, a temperature of around 37℃ (body temperature) can be felt at a distance of about 1 metre.

Where can infrared heaters be used?

In general, heaters with infrared technology can be used both indoors and outdoors. They're commonly used in outdoor areas of restaurants, cafés and bars, for instance, so that customers can comfortably sit outside for longer. They're perfect for private terraces and balconies as well, of course. Inside, they can be used in various rooms at home or in industrial buildings. They're also used in saunas and even in farms where animals are kept.

What do I need to consider when buying an infrared heater?

When purchasing your infrared heater, select the power of the device according to the application area. For small areas, heaters with approx. 500 watts are sufficient. If you want to use the heater in a larger room or an outdoor area, however, it needs to have more power. For areas like this, we recommend 1,500 - 2,000W heaters in order to ensure sufficient heat generation.

Is infrared radiation harmful?

No, infrared radiation is not harmful. Infrared radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation and is not visible to the human eye. In fact, we're exposed to it everyday as part of natural sunlight. UV radiation, also a part of sunlight, is harmful, however. Fortunately, infrared heaters don't emit UV radiation which means they're completely safe.
