Gym lighting

There are many fitness studios. With a clever lighting concept, you can stand out from the multitude of competitors and attract new customers. In addition, the right lighting helps to increase the well-being of paying members, reduce the risk of injury and double the fun of training. In this blog article, we show you what you need to consider when buying gym lighting and which products are suitable.

What are the advantages of LED gym lighting?

  • Thanks to the lower energy consumption compared to conventional light sources, you save up to 90% on electricity costs with LED gym lighting and thus ensure a better ecological footprint.
  • The high switching stability and resilience of LED lamps guarantees you full light output until the end of their service life - without annoying flickering.
  • Due to the long product life of up to 100,000 hours, the purchase price of LEDs pays for itself quite quickly.
  • A lighting concept with LEDs is environmentally friendly because the products are free of toxic substances such as mercury and can therefore be recycled.
  • As a fitness studio operator, you can take advantage of government subsidies.
  • LED lamps heat up much less than halogens and other conventional lamps - so your customers don't sweat more than they should while exercising.

Which lights in which areas in the gym?

Optimal lighting promotes endurance and improves athletic performance, which is why it is so important. The different areas of a gym should be considered individually when planning the lighting, because the demands on the lighting there are just as different. To make it easier for you to plan a lighting concept, we have listed the most important areas with the appropriate products below.

Entrance and cash desk area

The entrance area of the fitness studio is the first thing new potential customers see as soon as they enter the gym. This is where members sign in, new customer meetings take place and contracts are signed. This is why you should ensure a attractive presentation of your premises in this area. Pendants for the entrance and checkout area are not only convincing with a modern design - the glare-free lighting is also a real eye-catcher. The high-quality products create an inviting ambience and score with easy installation.

Training area

The training area should be illuminated with at least 100 lux but we recommend a higher illuminance of 300 lux so that your customers have enough light while exercising.

In the area where customers train lying down, whether on the mat with their own body weight or on a piece of equipment, no ceiling lights should be installed - LED wall lights or lamps with asymmetrical light distribution are better here. The latter are also available with modern LED technology, so they do not consume too much electricity with this type of gym lighting.

Course rooms

The course rooms offer a wide variety of programmes - from quiet Pilates to lively Zumba. In order to do the different courses, we recommend the use of Smart Lighting products for this fitness area. With these, you have the possibility to adjust the lighting mood individually to the course theme. You can either use your smartphone for control (the lighting can then be activated via app or voice command before the start of the workout) or you can order a smart remote control or a control panel with the lamps. Of course, you can also find the matching accessories in our shop.

Weight room

In the weight room, not only physical strength plays an important role, but also concentration. Therefore, you should install LED lamps with a cool white or daylight white colour temperature here. These have between 3,300 and 6,500 Kelvin. These light colours promote vision and concentration. Moreover, customers who train in a weight room want less of a feel-good atmosphere; instead, they would much rather look at their muscles lifelike in the mirrors. For this reason, gym lighting should not only have the right colour temperature but also the highest possible colour rendering level - it is best to choose 90-99 Ra, because then the colours appear particularly natural.

Yoga room

Yoga is about unity and harmony - this should also be present with regard to the lighting. Therefore, preferably rely on only one product line and decide on one type of light. To immerse the yoga room of your fitness studio in a relaxed atmosphere, you can use dimmable LED lamps, for example. These create the right mood with a soft light. It is best to choose products with an extra warm white (< 2,700 Kelvin) to warm white (3,300 Kelvin) colour temperature.

Changing rooms

In the changing rooms, there should be bright light with a high illuminance of 300 lux. A colour temperature of at least 3,000 Kelvin manages the balancing act between bright light, which conveys hygiene and also safety, and a certain feel-good atmosphere. Please note: In collective changing rooms, there should be a uniform lighting level; louvre luminaires, for example, are recommended for this purpose. For individual cubicles, an LED spotlight makes more sense because it can be precisely aligned. Wall luminaires around the mirror then round off the lighting concept for individual cubicles.

Washrooms

In washrooms - as in your private bathroom - make sure that the lighting has a higher protection rating. Lamps near the washbasin could be splashed by water and should therefore have at least IPX4 protection. Lamps located near a shower need IPX7. Waterproof luminaires should be standard in wet rooms, as should uniform lighting.

To save on electricity costs, you can use LED sensor lights in special areas such as the changing rooms, washrooms and toilets, as well as in the staff break room. The presence lighting reliably provides light as soon as the room is used. If you already have efficient LED lighting there, you can easily equip it with sensors.

Outdoor area

When (re)planning your gym lighting, don't just focus on the interior, because the very first thing a potential new gym member sees is the exterior - even outside your opening hours. With impressive facade lighting, you attract the attention of passers-by and can recruit new customers by leaving the competition behind. In addition, LED outdoor lighting serves as ideal burglary protection. Does your fitness studio have its own car park? This should also be perfectly illuminated, especially in the evening hours. You will find suitable products in our category "Car park lighting".

What should you look for when buying lighting for gyms?

According to the European standard DIN EN 12193 | 2019-07, the lighting of sports facilities (and this includes gyms) must create good visual conditions for everyone involved, which means both reception staff, course instructors and the customers. Luminaires with low glare should therefore be used. These can be recognised by the property UGR < 19.

LED panels, for example, emit a diffuse and glare-free light - making them ideal for gym lighting.

Can the HCL concept be used in the gym?

Yes, especially in classrooms, the HCL lighting concept can be used with regard to gym lighting. When using Human Centric Lighting, the light adapts to the intensity of the exercises (e.g. a strong red for motivation or bright blue for cooling down towards the end of the course). But you can also install HCL lamps in the open training area. There, they create a connection to the "outside world" with their natural light. In the best case, the light coming in through windows is used for lighting and only supplemented with artificial light depending on the time of day. Bright light is advantageous because it slows down the release of the sleep hormone melatonin, which prevents fatigue and increases the ability to concentrate.

Note:

Besides the lighting, the colour concept of your gym should also be coherent. The colours yellow, orange, red, brown and purple increase the pulse, body temperature, attention, performance and aggression. Therefore, these shades are well suited for the cardio and strength area. If your gym also has a sauna area, you can use red tones here, for example, because of the association with warmth. Cooler colours such as blue, green and turquoise have a relaxing effect and relieve stress. Therefore, these colours are suitable for relaxation rooms, the wellness area and also toilets, as blue in particular signals both silence and cleanliness. White walls often convey a sterile effect, which is why we strongly recommend adding some colour - either on the wall or with the help of furniture, decorative elements or lighting technology.

Does my gym need emergency lighting?

To protect both your staff and your customers, we recommend using emergency lighting in the gym. This ensures that the building can be left safely and that no avoidable accidents occur if, for example, there is a power failure. Normal lighting will then no longer work unless the LED lights are equipped with an emergency module. Furthermore, it is important to provide not only emergency lighting but also safety lighting. This includes illuminated signs marking escape and rescue routes. You will find these and LEDs with emergency module in our category "Emergency lighting".
