Why is my light bulb flickering?

What is light flickering?

Flickering lights is an issue many people encounter and is one of the most annoying predicaments possible with lighting. Flickering lights may create the perfect atmosphere in scary movies but, in real life, it's not something you want in your house or office. Lighting is meant to keep our homes and workplaces safe and comfortable and flickering lights don't do that.

What can I do to stop my lights from flickering?

When facing this problem, you can always try replacing your old light with a new one. If you haven't already, this may also be a good time to switch to LED. LED lights are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes so you should be able to find the perfect LED replacement to suit your needs. Before replacing a bulb, make sure the power is turned off and the bulb has cooled down. If your light is still flickering after you've switched to the new LED one, you'll have to look for other solutions.

LED bulb flickers

What is causing the flickers?

There are several reasons that lights flicker including things like a drop or variation in voltage that makes the lights dim for an instant. Let's try to fix the LED light flicker. When trying to identify the cause of the problem, it's important to consider a number of things including the following:

1. Type of lighting
It's common knowledge that fluorescent tubes flicker when they start up and, in general, they are more inclined to flicker than other types of lighting. A number of other factors including things like the temperature, the age of the tube, and the functionality of the ballast and starter can all contribute to fluorescent flickering.

If your fluorescent light only flickers when you turn it on, this is normal and there's nothing to worry about. You can always consider an LED alternative, however. Not only are they far more efficient than fluorescent tubes, but they also light up instantly without any flickering. Why not check out our range of LED tubes, LED panels, or LED CFL bulbs.

2. Dimmers
Dimming your lights can cause flickers. That's because lots of dimmer switches, and older ones in particular, are designed to handle higher electrical loads. Trying to dim low-voltage LED lights with a high-power dimmer switch can cause flickering, therefore. You should always check that your dimmer switch is compatible with the light source you're using. In this article about dimmers, we would like to tell you more about the subject: Which dimmer switch for LED lighting?

3. Faulty connections
Flickers can also be caused by faulty connections in light fixtures themselves as well as between the fixture and the light source or even the wiring.
If you're unable to determine the cause of the flicker in your house or you've found the cause but are unable to solve it yourself, we recommend getting a professional to help.
