How do I find the right GU10 LED bulb?

Nothing can be more annoying than a burnt-out spotlight. Especially when the other spots still work fine, replacing them can be a challenge. After all, you want to find an equivalent alternative in terms of appearance, light colour, energy consumption and purchase price. In this blog, we will help you choose the right GU10 spotlight bulb.

What is a GU10?

First of all, let’s start by explaining what a GU10 bulb is. A GU10 is the most common type of spotlight found in most homes nowadays. GU10 refers to the type of fitting. Two short, squar-ish pins protrude from the base of the bulb. The number of 10 refers to the distance in millimeters (mm.)between those two pins It’s a push-and-twist type of fitting.

How can I exchange my GU10 Halogen bulbs for GU10 LED bulbs?

You want to switch from GU10 halogen to GU10 LED, but what should you look for? When switching to LED it is important that you know your current wattage. Always check your current bulb and make sure to match the current wattage. Of course, you also need to consider the light color, dimming, and beam angle. For more information about switching from halogen to LED, you can check this guide.

What light color do i need for my GU10 LED bulb?

It's important to know what kind of light color you prefer for your GU10 spotlight bulbs. In the professional world of lighting we speak of ‘kelvin’ when we are talking about the color of light:

2700K - Very warm white

The light color 2700K is mainly used to create a cozy atmosphere in living rooms, bedrooms, retail, and hospitality such as restaurants, theatres, and hotels.

3000K - Warm white

3000K also is a warm color, but this color is less used for coziness and more used for work-related matters. Can also be used in a more productive space such as your kitchen, restaurant, or hotel.

4000K - Cool white

The light color of 4000K makes people productive and is therefore highly suitable for workplaces such as offices or retail and beauty salons such as hairdressers.

6500K Daylight

This light color is used where we want the brightest light possible. 6500K is used in garages, hospitals, and laboratories where people work very precisely.

What beam angle do i need?

Once you know your current wattage and the color you prefer it’s important to know where you are using the light for. This is because every spot has a different ‘beam angle’. The beam angle of a lamp is the angle at which the light is distributed or emitted. The smaller the angles in degree (D), the narrower the beam. So a smaller beam angle is to highlight your paintings or art. And a wider beam angle is for general lighting. The most commonly used beam angle for general lighting is the one between 24 and 40. Can i dim GU10 LED spotlight bulbs?

Yes! When you use the filter on the GU10 LED product page you can choose by dimmable for yes or no. When dimming the light, the brightness becomes lower. But now there is also a bulb that can change color. The Philips Dimtone and the GlowDim from Osram. With these bulbs, it is possible to change from 2700K - 2200K - which is even warmer. In this way, you can create even more atmosphere.
